I am a fairly new Mac user myself, having bought my first MacBook last year while I was in New Orleans. After nearly 1 year of reliable usage here is my list of the essential software that every Mac (10.5.X, Intel) user should have installed. All of the software in this list is free, and not listed in any particular order!

Ok here we go!

1. VLC Player – This has played everyone of my movie files just fine, I’ve never had any problems at all! This is also very powerful as you can load subtitle files, chose what audio track, and more.

2. uTorrent - This has got to be the best Torrent program available for Mac, it is still fairly new on OSX so there are some small problems. (on my mac it needs to be closed before shutting down the computer. But other than that it works great, downloads all my torrents just fine.

3. UnRarX - This program will take care of all your rar archived files and expand them. Quite an old piece of software but always gets the job done, and I actually had to search for a long time to find somethings like this.

4. Open Office - I did run Microsoft Office for a short while, but after constant crashed, large file sizes and sluggish performance I upgraded to Open Office – for free! This is a great piece of software to do all of your excel and word word.

5. Senuti - This is a great little application to transfer songs off your ipod or iphone onto another computer, new computer or if you’ve reinstalled OSX. It’s not 100% free but there is a 30day trial, try it out!

Thats my top 5 free list, I hope these programs will be as helpful to you as they are to me!
